• TEMPERATURE SETTINGS - Set the thermostat at 78° F or higher in the summer. Actually, you may want to set it a little higher when not at home. Also, consider portable fans; they can help you feel comfortable at higher thermostat settings. And don't forget to turn the air conditioner off when going on vacation.

LIGHTING - Keep fixtures and bulbs clean. Dirt isn't only unsightly; it can absorb as much as 50% of the light.

CLOTHES WASHER - Washing two small loads uses approximately twice as much electricity as when combining them into one full load. Combining loads cuts down on the number of loads you have to wash. And that reduces your energy use.

DRYERS - Overloading the dryer makes the dryer work harder. Plus, it may cause excessive lint and wrinkling.

WATER HEATER TEMPERATURE - Lowering the temperature of your water heater not only saves energy, but also reduces the chance of scalding. A 10° F reduction in temperature saves up to 14% of your water heating costs. For an average family this amounts to savings of up to $30 to $60 per year on an electric water heater.

DISHWASHER - Your dishwasher uses the same amount of water regardless of how many dishes are washed. Wash full loads whenever possible.

POOLS - If possible, avoid running the pool pump constantly, 8 hours a day should be sufficient. An automatic timer on your pool pump makes this convenient and helps to keep the costs down.

DAMPERS - If you have a fireplace, keep the damper tightly closed when not in use. A glass fireplace screen can help minimize the loss of conditioned air.
